What Delta's Water Picks Up on the Way to Your House

Whole house water filtration in Delta, CO targets the things your water gains after treatment: chloramine added as a disinfectant, the trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids that form as it travels through the city's pipes, and the occasional sediment stirred up when a main is worked on. Our Grand Junction team comes to you in Delta with a free water test so you know your own chlorine residual and dissolved solids before choosing a system. Call (970) 773-6439.

Delta's water arrives from the Project 7 plant already treated and meeting every federal standard. The City of Delta then distributes it through its own system and samples it there. Those city-specific results are what this page is built on, because they reflect what is in the pipes on your street rather than what leaves the plant.

Hardness is the other half of Delta water, and a filter will not touch it. Our Delta service area page covers both, so you can see how filtration and softening work together.

City of Delta Sampling

Disinfection Byproducts in Delta, 2021 and 2025

From the City of Delta's 2022 report and Project 7's 2026 report (City of Delta rows).

TTHMs: 37.7 ppb in 2025

Delta's four 2025 samples ranged from 32.7 to 42.1 ppb, against a federal limit of 80 ppb. In 2021 the city's average was 28.43 ppb.

HAA5: 28.3 ppb in 2025

The 2025 range was 21.6 to 34.3 ppb, with a 60 ppb limit. The 2021 average was 23.98 ppb. Both byproduct groups were higher in 2025 than in 2021, and both stayed within limits.

Chloramine residual

The City of Delta disinfects with chloramine. All ten December 2025 samples met the required residual, which means the disinfectant reaches your tap.

Sediment after main breaks

In October 2025 Delta issued a boil water notice after a water main break, rescinded on October 11. Repairs like that can stir loose sediment in the lines for a while afterward.

How a Whole House System Handles Delta Water

A whole house system works in stages, and each stage has a job. The first is a sediment filter that catches sand, rust flakes and grit, the kind of material that can show up after main work or in older galvanized plumbing inside a home. Taking it out first keeps it from clogging everything downstream and from settling in aerators and appliance valves. The main stage is carbon, and for Delta it has to be the right carbon. Chloramine is more stable than plain chlorine and reacts more slowly with ordinary activated carbon, so a system that does well on chlorinated water can underperform here. We use media suited to chloramine and size the tank so water has enough contact time at full household flow. The same carbon bed reduces TTHMs and HAAs, along with the taste and smell people associate with tap water. Because the system sits at the main line, it treats shower water too, where heat and steam make chloramine and byproducts most noticeable. Our whole house water filtration page goes into the stages in more detail.

What We Install

Filtration Systems for Delta Homes

Chosen after the test, not before it.

Sediment plus carbon, whole house

The core system for Delta water: particles out first, then chloramine and byproducts. Details on our whole house filtration page.

Add a softener

Project 7 water averaged 128 mg/L hardness in 2025. Filtration does not remove hardness, so many Delta homes add a water softener after the carbon stage.

HydraShield Elite

Our HydraShield Elite stacks sediment and carbon stages with salt-free hardness treatment, an option for Delta homeowners who want one unit instead of two.

Whole-home RO

For the most complete treatment, including dissolved solids, a whole-home reverse osmosis system builds on the same pretreatment.

How It Works

Filtering Delta Water, Step by Step

We read your water

Our team comes to Delta and runs the free water test: chlorine residual, dissolved solids, hardness and a look at any sediment.

We match the stages

If sediment is an issue, we size the prefilter for it. Then we choose carbon media and tank size for chloramine at your home's flow rate.

We install and hand over

The system goes in at the main line. We check pressure, confirm the residual is gone at the tap, and show you what the system needs over time.

What Delta Homeowners Should Know About Filtration

Byproduct numbers vary with season and location. Delta's TTHMs spread almost 10 ppb across just four samples in 2025, and levels generally run higher in warm months and at the far ends of a distribution system, where water has been in the pipes longest. Your tap is the sample that counts. After any boil water notice or main repair on your street, run the cold tap until it is clear before using water for drinking, and check faucet aerators for grit. A sediment stage makes those episodes far less noticeable. If you keep an aquarium, remember chloramine is toxic to fish and needs a dechlorinator that handles ammonia as well. Frequently asked questions

Does Delta use chlorine or chloramine?
Chloramine. Project 7's 2026 report lists chloramine as the disinfectant in the City of Delta system, and the city's 2022 report did as well.
What are the disinfection byproduct levels in Delta?
In 2025 the City of Delta averaged 37.7 ppb total trihalomethanes (limit 80) and 28.3 ppb haloacetic acids (limit 60). In 2021 the averages were 28.43 and 23.98 ppb. All results were within federal limits.
Why does Delta water need a special carbon filter?
Chloramine reacts more slowly with standard activated carbon than free chlorine does. A system for Delta needs carbon suited to chloramine and enough contact time. Our whole house filtration page explains the difference.
Will filtration help after a water main break?
A sediment prefilter catches the grit that can come loose after main repairs, protecting fixtures and appliances. It is not a substitute for following a boil water notice while one is in effect.
Who tests Delta's water, the city or Project 7?
Both. Project 7 tests the water leaving its plant, and the City of Delta samples its own distribution system for disinfectant, byproducts, lead and copper. The city rows in Project 7's 2026 report show Delta's own results. Call (970) 773-6439 for a test at your tap.
