What the City of Aspen Says About Its Water

From the city's About Aspen Water page and its latest Consumer Confidence Report.

Most of Aspen's water comes directly from federally designated wilderness via Castle and Maroon creeks, and the city says your home typically gets Castle Creek water, supplemented from Maroon Creek at times. It is treated at the Castle Creek Water Treatment Plant, two conventional filtration plants with a combined capacity of 20 million gallons a day. The city adds sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and supplements fluoride, a practice approved in 1968. On hardness, the city is direct: calcium and magnesium cause the white residue and mineral particles people see, they are not a health risk, and treatment does not remove them. The latest report shows total trihalomethanes averaging 8.96 ppb and haloacetic acids averaging 7.61 ppb, under federal limits. Our test measures your hardness in grains per gallon so a softener can be sized correctly.

What We Install

Systems for Aspen's Very Hard Water

Hardness is the main issue here, but not the only thing worth testing.

Water Softener Installation

With hardness the city places between 8 and 17 grains per gallon, a water softener is the direct answer to scale in water heaters, boilers, fixtures and glass shower doors. We size it to your measured hardness and household use.

HydraShield Elite

For owners who prefer not to deal with salt, the HydraShield Elite is our salt-free whole-house system, designed and built in Western Colorado and maintenance-free under normal use.

Whole House Water Filtration

Aspen disinfects with sodium hypochlorite. A whole house filtration system reduces chlorine taste and odor at every tap and pairs well with a softener.

Whole Home Reverse Osmosis

If you want both minerals and dissolved solids taken down across the whole house, whole-home reverse osmosis is the most complete option. We will tell you honestly whether your results justify it.

What Aspen Homeowners Should Know

Aspen's hardness moves with the seasons as stream flows change, which means a reading taken during spring runoff may differ from one taken in late fall. That swing matters when sizing a softener, so we size to your measured number with room for the harder months. The city also reports that it has not detected lead in its treated water or source water; its report explains that lead generally comes from service lines and home plumbing rather than the source, and the city keeps a service line inventory you can ask about. If cloudy or milky water ever comes out of the tap, the city notes that is usually air in the lines and clears in a few minutes. The free water test shows what is in your water at your address.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is Aspen's water?
The City of Aspen calls its source and drinking water very hard, at about 130 to 300 ppm, or 8 to 17 grains per gallon, varying by season. The city also states that its conventional treatment does not reduce hardness.
Where does Aspen's water come from?
Mostly from federally designated wilderness via Castle and Maroon creeks. The city says homes typically receive Castle Creek water, sometimes supplemented from Maroon Creek, treated at the Castle Creek Water Treatment Plant.
Is the white residue on my Aspen fixtures harmful?
The city says the white residue and mineral particles come from calcium and magnesium and are not a health risk. They do build up over time on fixtures and inside appliances, which is what a softener prevents.
Does Aspen add fluoride and chlorine?
Yes. The city supplements fluoride, approved by a 1968 council vote, and disinfects with sodium hypochlorite. A whole-home filter can reduce chlorine taste; we explain on site what different systems do and do not remove.
Is there a salt-free option for Aspen homes?
Yes, the HydraShield Elite is our salt-free whole-house system. During the free test we compare it with a conventional softener for your water and household. Call (970) 773-6439.
Do you have a team based in Aspen?
No. We are based in Grand Junction, and our Grand Junction team comes to you in Aspen.
