Spring and Well Water From the Red Rock

Smart Living Water installs whole house water filtration in Moab, UT, and we always begin with a free water test at your faucet. Moab is groundwater country. Moab City Water supplies its customers from three wells and four springs, and the city's earlier reports describe that water coming from the Navajo Sandstone, Kayenta Formation and Wingate Sandstone, which together make up the Glen Canyon Aquifer System. Water that comes up through rock carries rock's minerals, and the amount varies from one source to the next.

We travel from Grand Junction to Moab, and also to Castle Valley. Smart Living Water is family-owned by Bryce and Joredan Quigley, rated 4.9 stars across 76 Google reviews, and a member of the Western Colorado Home Builders Association. Call (970) 773-6439 to set up a visit.

What Moab City's 2024 Water Report Shows

Seven groundwater sources, with mineral content that changes between them.

The 2024 report lists Moab City Water's sources as Spring #1, Spring #2, Spring #3, Skakle Spring, Well #6, Well #10 (Robertson) and Well #12 (Golf Course), all groundwater. The city rates its sources as having low susceptibility to contamination. Results vary noticeably between sources: total dissolved solids ran from 116 to 344 ppm, sulfate from about 32 to 116 ppm, and sodium from about 5.7 to 15.4 ppm. Arsenic ranged from not detected to 0.9 ppb, far below the 10 ppb limit, and nitrate stayed under 1 ppm. In the 2022 lead and copper round, the 90th-percentile lead result was 5.3 ppb, with no homes above the action level.

What We Test for in Moab

Total Dissolved Solids

With city TDS ranging from 116 to 344 ppm depending on the source, your tap's number tells us a lot about what kind of treatment makes sense.

Hardness

The city report does not publish a hardness figure, so we measure it directly. That decides whether a softener or scale-control system belongs in your plan.

Sulfate and Taste

Sulfate at higher levels can affect taste. We check it along with the overall mineral profile so you know what you are drinking.

Private Well Water

Outside the city system, and throughout Castle Valley, homes rely on their own groundwater. We test well water in the home the same way and go through the results with you.

Systems We Install in the Moab Area

Groundwater calls for treatment matched to its minerals.

Whole House Filtration

A whole-home filtration system treats water where it enters the house, so every faucet and shower benefits.

Whole-Home Reverse Osmosis

Where dissolved solids are the issue, whole-home RO is the treatment that actually lowers them. Carbon alone does not.

Water Softeners

White crust on faucets is the usual sign of hard water. If the test confirms it, a water softener stops the buildup in pipes and appliances.

HydraShield Elite

Households that want mineral control and filtration without two separate units often choose the HydraShield Elite, which is maintenance-free under normal use.

What Moab and Castle Valley Homeowners Should Know

In Moab, the water at your tap depends partly on which wells and springs are feeding your part of the system, which is why the city's mineral readings cover such a wide range. In Castle Valley the picture is different. The town has no municipal water system, so homes rely on individual wells. In 2001 the EPA designated the Castle Valley Aquifer System, made up of valley-fill deposits and the underlying Cutler Formation, as the sole or principal source of drinking water for the area, with no reasonable alternative supply. If your household depends on that aquifer, no city lab is checking your water, and a test is how you find out what you have. Call (970) 773-6439 or use the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Moab's drinking water come from?
Moab City Water uses groundwater from three wells and four springs, according to its 2024 water quality report. Earlier city reports describe the source rock as the Navajo Sandstone, Kayenta Formation and Wingate Sandstone of the Glen Canyon Aquifer System.
Is Moab's water hard?
The city does not publish a hardness figure, and its dissolved solids vary from 116 to 344 ppm by source. We measure hardness at your tap during the free test so you get an actual number.
Do you serve Castle Valley?
Yes. We travel to Castle Valley as well as Moab. Homes there draw on the Castle Valley Aquifer System, which the EPA designated a sole source aquifer in 2001, and we test well water in the home.
Will a filter lower total dissolved solids?
Carbon filtration improves taste and removes chlorine and many organics, but it does not lower dissolved minerals much. Reverse osmosis does. Your TDS result helps decide which approach fits.
Is there arsenic in Moab's water?
The city's 2024 report shows arsenic from not detected up to 0.9 ppb across its sources, far below the 10 ppb federal limit. If you are on a private well, your levels are unknown until you test.
