Paonia Runs on Mountain Springs

Smart Living Water installs whole house water filtration in Paonia, CO, and every home starts with a free water test. Paonia's raw water comes from a series of springs at the base of Mount Lamborn, in the North Fork of the Gunnison River watershed. Our Grand Junction team comes to you in Paonia to test the water at your own tap. Call (970) 773-6439 to book a visit.

Spring water has a good reputation, and a 2000 feasibility report on the town's water supply described these springs as high quality supplies fed by snowmelt from the peaks above. Paonia's own water reports classify the springs as groundwater under the influence of surface water, which means they are treated and disinfected like a surface supply. A spring source doesn't make every tap in town the same, though, and the town's distribution system has had its share of problems over the years.

We're a family-owned Grand Junction company with 76 Google reviews averaging 4.9 stars, and we belong to the Western Colorado Home Builders Association. In Paonia, as everywhere, we'd rather tell you your water is fine than sell you equipment you don't need.

How Paonia's Spring System Works

Snowmelt, shale and a supply that tracks the weather.

Paonia collects water from a network of numbered springs on Mount Lamborn, which the town's reports group into several collection systems. A 2000 feasibility report for the town explained why the springs exist: permeable, weathered igneous rock sits on top of much tighter Mancos shale, so snowmelt soaks in and emerges where the two layers meet. The supply is sensitive to weather. In 2019, after a hot, dry 2018, the springs ran at about half their normal flow, and leaks in the town system led to a boil order until lines were flushed and samples cleared. More recently the town has moved to Stage 2 water restrictions when use outpaced what the springs were producing, and it commissioned a new hydrogeological investigation of its supply, completed in October 2025. None of that means your water is unsafe today. It does mean conditions change, and a test is how you see your own.

What We Look For in Paonia Water

Chlorine and Taste

Spring water is disinfected before delivery. We measure chlorine at your faucet and explain how carbon filtration removes the taste.

Sediment and Turbidity

After line breaks, repairs or flushing, any system can send sediment through for a while. A whole-house pre-filter keeps it out of your fixtures and water heater.

Hardness and Minerals

We measure hardness and total dissolved solids rather than assuming. Spring water off volcanic rock can be quite different from river water in the valley.

Private Wells and Springs

Plenty of homes around Paonia aren't on town water. If yours runs on a well or private spring, we test for iron, manganese and hardness on site and explain when a certified lab panel makes sense.

What Paonia Homeowners Should Know

When a spring-fed system loses pressure or has to be flushed, the water that follows can carry more sediment or taste stronger of chlorine for a while. Homes with a whole-house sediment and carbon stage notice those swings much less. It is a practical upgrade in a town where supply has tracked the snowpack. If you're outside town limits, your water is your responsibility, and that's true for a lot of the North Fork valley. Wells and private springs can pick up iron, manganese, hardness or other minerals from the rock they pass through. A free test is the fastest way to know where you stand.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Paonia's water come from?
Paonia's raw water comes from a series of springs at the base of Mount Lamborn, in the North Fork of the Gunnison River watershed. The town's reports classify the springs as groundwater under the influence of surface water.
Is Paonia water safe to drink?
Paonia's water is treated and tested under state rules, and the town publishes an annual Drinking Water Quality Report. What reaches your faucet can still differ from house to house, which is why we test at your tap.
Why does Paonia sometimes restrict water use?
The springs depend on snowmelt. In dry years the town has asked for cutbacks when demand outpaced spring production, and in 2019 the springs ran at about half their normal flow.
I'm on a well near Paonia. What should I test for?
Start with hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids, which we check on site. We'll also explain when a certified lab test for bacteria or other contaminants is worth doing.
