From McPhee Reservoir to Your Kitchen Sink

Smart Living Water installs whole house water filtration in Cortez, CO, and we start with a free water test at your tap. Every drop the City of Cortez treats comes from McPhee Reservoir, which stores Dolores River water, and the city disinfects it with chlorine. In 2025 the city's water met federal limits. The figure most worth a look in Cortez is disinfection byproducts, the compounds that form when chlorine meets natural organic matter in surface water, because the city's averages sat closer to their limits than in many Western Slope systems.

Cortez is in our service area, and our Grand Junction team makes the trip for each visit. Seventy-six Google reviewers have given us a 4.9-star average, and we are proud members of the Western Colorado Home Builders Association. Bryce and Joredan Quigley own and run the business. Cortez Water in the City's 2026 Report

Within federal limits, with byproducts worth knowing about.

The City of Cortez 2026 Drinking Water Quality Report covers calendar year 2025. Source: McPhee Reservoir, a surface water intake. Disinfectant: chlorine. Total trihalomethanes averaged 67.97 ppb, with individual samples from 55.4 to 84.5 ppb, against a limit of 80 that applies to the running average. Haloacetic acids averaged 50.31 ppb, with samples from 34 to 100 ppb, against a limit of 60. Neither was a violation. In the most recent lead and copper round (2024), the 90th-percentile lead result was 2.2 ppb, and one of 20 homes sampled came in above the 15 ppb action level. The city also treats and supplies water to Towaoc and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.

What We Test for in Cortez

Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids

These are the main reason Cortez households call us. A whole-home carbon stage reduces both before water reaches showers and faucets, which also matters because you breathe some of them in steam.

Lead From Home Plumbing

The city's lead number was low overall, but one sampled home was above the action level. The report lists household plumbing corrosion as the typical source, so testing at your own faucet is the only way to know about your house.

Chlorine Taste and Odor

Chlorine keeps the water safe in the mains. Removing it at your home's entry point is a comfort choice, and carbon handles it well.

Hardness

Cortez's report leaves hardness out. Our test fills that gap, so you only buy a softener if your own reading supports one.

What We Install in Cortez

Each one sized to the results from your own tap.

Whole House Carbon Filtration

For a chlorinated surface supply with Cortez's byproduct levels, a whole-home filtration system is usually the core of the plan.

Whole-Home Reverse Osmosis

Whole-home RO goes further, taking out dissolved contaminants as well as byproducts, for households that want the most thorough treatment.

Drinking Water at the Tap

For a smaller first step, our drinking water filtration focuses on what you drink and cook with.

HydraShield Elite

The HydraShield Elite is the system to look at if you want byproduct reduction and scale protection from one unit. Under normal use it runs maintenance-free.

What Cortez Homeowners Should Know

A disinfection byproduct result is compliant when the running average across the year stays under the limit, and Cortez's did. Individual samples still swing, and the city's own table shows haloacetic acid readings as high as 100 ppb at points in the system. If you would rather not depend on where your house sits in that range, carbon filtration at the main line is a simple, proven step. Lead is the other house-specific question. The city controls its pipes, not yours. Our free test gives you numbers for both. Call (970) 773-6439 or use the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Cortez get its drinking water?
The City of Cortez says all the water its plant treats comes from McPhee Reservoir, which stores Dolores River water. The city also supplies Towaoc and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe.
Are disinfection byproducts high in Cortez?
The city met federal limits in 2025, with trihalomethanes averaging 67.97 ppb (limit 80) and haloacetic acids averaging 50.31 ppb (limit 60). Those averages are closer to the limits than in many systems, and individual samples ranged higher. A whole-home carbon system reduces both.
Is there lead in Cortez tap water?
The city's 90th-percentile lead result was 2.2 ppb, under the 15 ppb action level, but one of 20 sampled homes was above it. Lead mostly comes from household plumbing, so we test at your faucet.
Do I need a softener in Cortez?
We will know after the test. The city's report does not list hardness, so we measure it in your home and recommend a softener only if your number supports one.
Will a whole-home filter remove chlorine taste?
Yes. A carbon stage at the main line takes chlorine taste and odor out of every faucet and shower in the house.
