Telluride's Water Starts in the Bridal Veil Basin

Smart Living Water installs whole house water filtration in Telluride, CO, and we start with a free water test at your home. The town's two main supplies, Mill Creek and Blue Lake, are surface water sources in the Bridal Veil Basin, and our Grand Junction team travels to Telluride to test what arrives at your kitchen sink. Call (970) 773-6439 to schedule.

The Town of Telluride's 2025 Drinking Water Quality Report also lists the Falls Crest diversion and the Stillwell Portal infiltration gallery, a groundwater source the town keeps as a backup. Treatment is serious work here. The Mill Creek plant settles the water, adds a coagulant and runs it through membranes that remove particles smaller than 0.01 microns, and the Pandora plant uses microfiltration before chlorine is added.

Telluride is one of the farther trips we make from Grand Junction, and the test is still free. Our family-owned company holds a 4.9-star rating across 76 Google reviews and is a member of the Western Colorado Home Builders Association.

What Telluride's Water Report Shows

Low sodium, byproducts under the limits, and arsenic managed at the source.

In 2024, Telluride's total haloacetic acids averaged 30.94 parts per billion (individual results from 6.2 to 90.8) against a 60 ppb limit that applies to the running average, and total trihalomethanes averaged 22.22 ppb against an 80 ppb limit. Sodium was low at 3.07 parts per million, and nitrate was 0.15 ppm. The lead 90th percentile was 1 ppb and copper 0.19 ppm, both well under action levels. One local detail stands out. The town notes that water from Cornet Creek, used mainly in summer, runs partly through a titanium oxide filter that removes arsenic and is blended with Mill Creek and Stillwell water to land at about half the state arsenic limit, roughly 5 parts per billion. The source water assessment also lists existing and abandoned mine sites in the watershed among potential contamination sources. The town handles all of that before the water reaches you. What we add is a look at your own tap.

What We Test for in Telluride

Disinfection Byproducts

Haloacetic acids in town ranged widely from sample to sample in 2024. We explain what carbon filtration and reverse osmosis do to reduce them at your faucet.

Chlorine

We measure the chlorine residual at your tap. It's the main source of taste and odor complaints and it's simple to remove.

Arsenic and Metals on Wells

If your home is on a private well outside the town system, metals like arsenic, iron and manganese are worth checking. We start on site and explain when a certified lab panel is needed.

Hardness and pH

We measure hardness and pH directly. Low-mineral mountain water often doesn't need a softener, and we won't sell you one if it doesn't.

What Telluride Homeowners Should Know

Telluride doesn't add fluoride to its water, according to the town. If you're comparing systems, that's one less thing to weigh, since reverse osmosis would otherwise remove most of it. In August 2025 the town limited outdoor watering while the Pandora plant was down for scheduled maintenance, leaving Mill Creek as the main plant with Stillwell as backup. Source and plant changes like that are normal, and they're one reason people in mountain towns like a whole-house filter that keeps taste consistent. If your home is up a valley on its own well, you're the only one testing it, so start with ours.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Telluride's water come from?
The town's main sources are Mill Creek and Blue Lake in the Bridal Veil Basin, plus the Falls Crest diversion. The Stillwell Portal infiltration gallery, a groundwater source, serves as a backup.
Is there arsenic in Telluride's water?
The town says Cornet Creek water, used mainly in summer, partly passes through a titanium oxide filter that removes arsenic, and is blended to about half the state limit. Private wells are a separate matter and worth testing.
What are disinfection byproduct levels in Telluride?
In 2024, haloacetic acids averaged 30.94 ppb (limit 60) and trihalomethanes averaged 22.22 ppb (limit 80), per the town's 2025 report.
