Ridgway Water Comes From Two Creeks

Smart Living Water installs whole house water filtration in Ridgway, CO, and every visit starts with a free water test. Ridgway's supply comes mainly from Beaver Creek and Cottonwood Creek, and our Grand Junction team travels to Ridgway to show you what that creek water carries once it reaches your faucet. Call (970) 773-6439 to book.

Beaver Creek water is diverted through the Ridgway Ditch into Lake Otonowanda, and Cottonwood Creek water comes in through the Happy Hollow diversion. The town's own assessments note that the Happy Hollow water tends to carry less sediment, and less potential for chlorine byproducts, than water from Beaver Creek or the lake. Which source is running on a given week can change what you notice at the tap.

Before you book, it's fair to ask who's coming. We're a family-owned Grand Junction business with a 4.9-star average across 76 Google reviews and a seat in the Western Colorado Home Builders Association, and a Ridgway test is as free as one in town.

How Ridgway Treats Its Water

Settling ponds, microfiltration and two creek sources.

Before water ever reaches the plant, it settles in three small pre-sedimentation ponds that knock down turbidity and sediment from the Happy Hollow Ditch, the Ridgway Ditch and Lake Otonowanda. From there it flows by gravity into the treatment building, where the town's capital assessment describes chlorine dioxide pretreatment for color, taste and odor, followed by a 500 gallon per minute vacuum microfiltration system installed around 2008. The town replaced the membrane modules in 2017. Surface water supplies are exposed to weather. In August 2024 a storm damaged the Beaver Creek diversion, and for a time no water was moving into the Ridgway Ditch, so the town leaned on the Happy Hollow source. Events like that are handled at the plant, but they're a good reminder that creek water is never exactly the same two months in a row.

What We Test for in Ridgway

Disinfection Byproducts

Organic matter in creek and reservoir water can react with chlorine to form trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. We explain what a carbon stage or reverse osmosis does about them.

Chlorine at the Tap

We measure the chlorine residual at your faucet. It's what keeps the water safe in the pipes, and it's also what most people taste.

Sediment and Clarity

Runoff season and diversion changes can send fine material downstream. A sediment reading shows if a pre-filter would help your home.

Hardness and TDS

We measure hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap and only bring up a softener if the numbers call for one.

What We Install

Systems We Install for Ridgway Homes

Whole House Water Filtration

Whole-house water filtration at the point of entry removes chlorine taste and sediment for every faucet and shower.

Whole Home Reverse Osmosis

Whole-home reverse osmosis gives the broadest reduction of dissolved solids and byproducts throughout the house, and it's a strong option for private wells.

Drinking Water Filtration

Drinking water filtration is the simplest fix if you mostly want better water for drinking and cooking.

HydraShield Elite

Our salt-free HydraShield Elite treats the whole house through several stages and is maintenance-free under normal use.

What Ridgway Homeowners Should Know

Plenty of homes around Ridgway sit outside the town water system on private wells. Those wells aren't covered by any town report, and nobody tests them unless the owner does. Wells in the region can carry hardness, iron, manganese and other naturally occurring minerals, and the only way to know about yours is to test it. We start with what we can measure on site and tell you when a certified lab panel is worth the extra step. If you're on town water, the main things people want fixed are chlorine taste and the occasional change in clarity when the source shifts. A whole-house carbon and sediment system takes care of both.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Ridgway's water come from?
The town's supply comes mainly from Beaver Creek, diverted through the Ridgway Ditch into Lake Otonowanda, and Cottonwood Creek through the Happy Hollow diversion.
How does Ridgway treat its water?
Water settles in pre-sedimentation ponds, then goes through chlorine dioxide pretreatment and a vacuum microfiltration system before disinfection, according to the town's capital assessment.
Why does Ridgway water sometimes taste different?
The town draws from more than one source, and the town's own documents note that Happy Hollow water carries less sediment and byproduct potential than Beaver Creek or Lake Otonowanda water. Source changes can affect taste. A whole-house carbon filter evens that out.
I have a well outside Ridgway. Can you test it?
Yes. We test wells for hardness, iron, manganese and total dissolved solids on site and explain what a certified lab panel would add.
Do you come to Ridgway?
Yes. Our Grand Junction team travels to Ridgway for free in-home water tests. Call (970) 773-6439.
